If you’re looking for unique, stylish shoes that also have a story, look no further than Pikolinos. Pikolinos is a Spanish shoe company featuring artisan-quality leather goods. They create eco-friendly, fashionable and globally stylish shoes you can find here in our shoe store in Basalt, CO.
Pikolinos was founded in 1984 by Juan Peran Ramos, who is the company’s current Honorary Chairman. Since then it has led the way in footwear manufacturing, marketing processes and eco-friendly business processes.
A commitment to the environment
Pikolinos creates products that not only use high-quality leather, but also respect the environment. The company is aware of the importance of the raw materials they use and are committed to using processes that do not harm the environment. Pikolinos even has a “zero paper” policy in their office and completes all administrative work digitally.
In 2005, the European Union awarded Pikolinos the EU Flower ecolabel for their Ecological City collection. They were the first Spanish business to receive the designation. Their collection used a chrome-free tanning process for the leather, water-based adhesives and natural dyes. The shoes featured biodegradable soles. Their commitment to the environment fits right in with our ideology at our shoe store in Basalt, CO.
Highlighting social issues
In 2007 the Pikolinos founder established the Juan Peran-Pikalinos Foundation, allowing the company to channel its resources into a variety of charitable organizations benefiting social, cultural and sports development projects. The foundation partners with more than 70 NGOs and benefits 16,000 families worldwide each year.
The company established Pikolinos Solidarity in 2009, a label that includes all of Pikolinos’ social projects. The label includes special collections created in partnership with at-risk communities. These communities face social exclusion or are dealing with special needs. Partnering with Pikolinos supports sustainability and integration for these communities, and as the brand says is a source of “hope and encouragement in their hearts.”
One of the first Pikolinos Solidarity collections was the Maasai Project. In 2011 the company launched a collection of sandals, shoes and jewelry decorated by women from the Maasai tribe in Kenya. The Maasai’s semi-nomadic lifestyle is threatened by increased urbanization and modern influences, so selling their colorful jewelry offers an additional source of income. Pikolinos’ partnership and the fair-trade business model offers the women financial independence while helping to protect National Park Maasai Mara in Kenya and the Maasai way of life. The company’s campaign featured fashion icon Olivia Palermo and the Maasai women, helping to raise awareness about the Maasai society.
For their fall 2015/spring 2016 line, Pikolinos launched a marketing campaign with independent artists featuring their paths to achieve their dreams. The models were alternative, creative thinkers working in various artistic media, reflecting the art behind Pikolinos’ leathercrafting.
